Aurukun is located in far-north Queensland, on the west side of the Cape York Peninsula, and it was originally set up as a Christian mission in 1904. The art centre at Aurukun has been functioning for almost fifty years.
Initially, what we now regard as art objects, were created in soft timber for ceremonial purposes, and then allowed to decompose in the bush after use. For several years now, however, with the possibility of pathways for artists to create works for the wider community of art lovers, the artists at Aurukun have responded in spectacular fashion. Carvers, and more recently, painters have interpreted the sublime tropical landscape, bird and ceremonial life into highly desirable and engaging objects and paintings.
Yours sincerely
Beverly Knight
