Frieze Art Fair, London preview takes place October 10, 2012 for invited guests
David Kordansky Gallery is very pleased to announce that it will be participating at Frieze Art Fair with a solo presentation by Jonas Wood. In his paintings and works on paper, Wood makes pictures of contemporary life. His subjects include portraits and self-portraits, domestic scenes and patterns, favorite athletes and sporting events, and works by other artists. If these themes appear at first like apogees of familiarity, Wood's approach to geometry and perspective makes them momentarily strange, delighting the eye by challenging it to piece together the visual field. Like the poet Wallace Stevens, who praised art that makes "the visible a little hard to see", Wood freshens our sense of a world that lies close at hand. He is part of an American tradition, traceable back to Emerson, of artists and thinkers who take the immediate stuff of their surroundings and transform it into something that is as familiar as it is new.
Jonas Wood was the subject of a solo project at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. His work has also recently been included in Mixed Signals: Artists Consider Masculinity in Sports, Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH. He lives |
