Tjala Artists succeed in creating a dynamic and fresh expression of their tjurkurpa (Dreaming) through a vibrant colour palette and stylistic experimentation, and the striking imagery used in their paintings is a unique representation of their ngurra (country).
Following on from Art Gallery of South Australia¡¯s superb travelling exhibition, Desert Country, and the extraordinary new exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, Living Water, which comprises the NGV¡¯s 150th year anniversary gift from the Felton bequest of 107 paintings from Pintupi, Spinifex, Anangu, Yulparija and Martu artists, Western Desert painting has reinvigorated Australian contemporary art with an explosion of vibrant colour and movement.
Living Water will be on display at the National Gallery of Victoria from 24 May 2011 – 28 May 2012.
Desert Country is touring nationally, and from 13 May 2011 – 21 October 2012 will be at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, University of Western Australia, WA, Mornington Peninsula Regional Art Gallery, Mornington, VIC, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Townsville, QLD, Newcastle Region Art Gallery, Newcastle, NSW and University of Queensland Art Museum, St Lucia, QLD.
Alcaston Gallery, in conjunction with Tjala Arts, is thrilled to exhibit this phenomenal body of work by truly gifted artists from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, South Australia.
Yours sincerely,
Beverly Knight
