VALE | Ms Yunupingu

On Wednesday 9th May, surrounded by family and friends at home in Gunyungara, Ms Yunupingu sadly passed away.

Ms Yunupingu had a way of communicating with people of all denominations in all places. Love, grief, happiness, tears, laughter - the sky, the earth, the universe; Paris, Shanghai, Melbourne, Sydney, Darwin, Yirrkala. Many people had the privilege of meeting her and listening to her life story. Some of us even joined in her crying ceremony to honour her ancestors, especially her father, but also to honour her wisdom of the universe and how she gathered us all together as one under her stars.

It was an incredible priviledge to represent the artist her entire career with the magnificent staff at Buku-Larrnggay Mulka in Yirrkala. Everyone at Alcaston Gallery over many years has been enriched by her leadership, inspiration and have been priviledged to exhibit her art.

The remarkable artwork of Ms Yunupingu is currently exhibited in Marking Time, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney until Sunday 3 June 2012

SAD NEWS | Kunmanara Palpatja

Last month saw the passing of another great and dearly loved artist, Kunmanara Palpatja.

Kunmanara Palpatja was a Ngangkari (traditional healer) and a senior Law man. It was our great honour to have represented the artist since 2005, and see him achieve notoriety for his remarkable skills as a painter and colourist.

His artwork is represented in many important collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, and National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

AUCTION RESULTS | Ginger Riley Munduwalawala

Last month the painting The Wet — My Mother's Country 1994 by Ginger Riley Munduwalawala (pictured) achieved the highest price  the artist has seen in the secondary market for three years.

The painting was sold for $96,000 at Deutscher and Hackett's Important Aboriginal and Oceanic Art auction in April.

It is a timely reminder that exceptional works held for a long period usually achieve substantial capital gains. Alcaston Gallery sold the painting for $8,000 in 1994 at a time not unlike now (very difficult financially for artists) to a French collector, where the work resided in a beautiful apartment over looking the Seine in Paris until recently.

Another extremely important painting by Ginger Riley Munduwalawala is to be sold at Sotheby's on June 27. CLICK HERE to view in Sotheby's online catalogue.

EUBENA NAMPITJIN & JANE GIMME | Current Exhibition

Until Friday 1st June Alcaston Gallery in conjunction with Warlayirti Artists, Balgo Hills, Western Australia is exhibiting new paintings from mother and daughter Eubena Nampitjin and Jane Gimme in Yippi watjaninpa yurntal wangka kamu tjukurrpa - Mother giving daughter her story and culture.

Pictured at right is the magnificent painting by Eubena Nampitjin Kinyu 2012, the only large scale work in the exhibition painted by the artist in April. Included in the exhibition we are screening a short film as part of the provenance of this painting, featuring Eubena Nampitjin, her daughter Jane Gimme and granddaughter Trevena Mudji. The three generations of women talk about Kinyu, their art and their country.

We invite clients to visit the gallery for a coffee and screening of this fantastic short film. Please contact Marie Falcinella at art@alcastongallery.com.au if you would like to make a time for a viewing.
