An exhibition of 160 pieces by Man Ray and 47 contemporary artists opened Wednesday at the Seoul Museum of Art.

The showcase, organized in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, combines the work of the avant garde photographer with that of the overseas and domestic artists he influenced. Well-known for his contributions to the Dada and Surrealist movements, the American photographer spent most of his life in France, and his imaginative take on fashion photography, portraits and photograms catapulted the entire field into the realm of artwork.

``There are 60 prints by Man Ray, but if we have all the spaces filled with him it¡¯d be too many,¡¯¡¯ Alain Sayag, honorary curator at the Centre Pompidou and a key organizer of the exhibition, told The Korea Times at the opening Tuesday.

So the pieces by Ray (1890-1976) were set apart within each gallery space. ``And then to put on the other side, contemporary artists using photography as Man Ray used it in the ¡®20s and also to show a lot of Korean artists that are here,¡¯¡¯ Sayag said. ``Because here in Korea you have a lot of great artists using photography and I thought it would be very interesting to put them together.¡¯¡¯

The integration of contemporary art also serves to help introduce the photographer to the public. Modern prints are juxtaposed with Ray¡¯s original photographs.

``You don¡¯t see that many vintage photographs, so [we wanted] to show the good vintage printed by Man Ray in the ¡®20 and ¡®30s¡¯¡¯ Sayag said. ``People can look and see the difference and appreciate the differences between old and modern printing. Because for an artist like Man Ray, it¡¯s very important the way the work is done.

``Photography is an object, it¡¯s not an image,¡¯¡¯ he added. ``It is an object and it¡¯s an object that would look very different compared from one print to the other print. You have to learn that and we try to give the public the element to do so.¡¯¡¯

The exhibition is divided into three sections that focus on photography as a record of reality, a creative world and the world of fiction beyond reality. Visitors can see Ray¡¯s portraits of French artist Jean Cocteau and writer-activist Nancy Cunard in the first part, and the recognizable ``Le Violin D¡¯Ingres¡¯¡¯ and photograms _ famously renamed ``rayographs¡¯¡¯ by the artist himself _ in the second and third groupings.

Contemporary artists include several well-known Korean and foreign names, such as Yoon Jeong-mi, Noh Sun-tag, Oh Hein-kuhn, Gregory Crewdson and Charles Freger. An innovative ``photo-sculpture¡¯¡¯ by Gwon O-sang can also be seen at the exhibition.

As is evident by the number of artists affected by his legacy, Ray¡¯s pieces changed the art world by redefining photography with artistic interpretations and imaginative compositions. For the man who popularly referred to his work as paintings, the skill of capturing a single moment was exalted beyond shutter speeds, apertures and light development.

As he once said: ``It has never been my object to record my dreams, just the determination to realize them.¡¯¡¯

``Man Ray¡¯s Photography & His Heritage¡¯¡¯ is on display through Aug. 15 at the Seoul Museum of Art, located behind Deoksugung Palace near City Hall. The exhibitions pieces were gathered from more than half a dozen galleries and collectors. General admission is 700 won; visit www.seoulmoa.or.kr.
