In the past four years since it’s incorporation in 2006, Tjungu Palya has grown to be a dynamic and innovative community art centre. Located about 100kms south of Uluru, Nyapari is set at the base of the majestic Mann Ranges in the heart of country traditionally owned by the Pitjantjatjara people. Over fifty artists from Murputja joined together with family members living in traditional country 180kms to the south at Watarru and created Tjungu Palya (‘Good Together’). Tjungu Palya artists are involved in producing fine art paintings on canvas, undertaking collaborative art and environmental enhancement projects, and training in small business and enterprise development, and is 100% owned by Aboriginal people.

Tjungu Palya promotes traditional arts practices while also encouraging new forms of artistic expression in the re-telling of the Tjukurpa (Dreaming). These are living stories that have been the inspiration for some of the most exciting contemporary artwork in Australia. Works from these artists resonate with an abundance of cultural integrity. They are rich in colour, encapsulating a celebration of ceremony, ancestry and landscape.

Artists at Tjungu Palya have a deep connection to country which is expressed with integrity, beauty and a bold creativity in the canvas paintings as traditional stories of the ancestors’ journeys are retold.

Each painting depicts a fragment of a larger story, a living history where an ancestor was involved in creating country. These spirit men and women from the Tjukurpa are still living in this desert landscape and have an ongoing relationship with the desert people.

These are living stories that have been the inspiration for some of the most exciting contemporary artwork in Australia. In the short time the artists of Tjungu Palya have been working they have received much acclaim for their work. They are represented in many public institutions and private collections.

Alcaston Gallery is very proud to have our inaugural Tjungu Palya exhibition, and to welcome Tiger Palpatja once more to the delight of our art lovers!
